Australian man on trial for allegedly selling fake intelligence reports to suspected Chinese spies.
Sydney businessman Alexander Csergo, 59, is on trial for reckless foreign interference, accused of providing fabricated reports to two individuals he believed were Chinese intelligence agents.
Prosecutors say he compiled misleading content on topics like AUKUS, the Quad, and lithium mining using open-source material, falsely claiming interviews with figures including former PM Kevin Rudd, who denies any contact.
Csergo, who lived in Shanghai and returned to Australia in 2023, allegedly received cash for the reports, delivered in person, and was found with a “shopping list” of sensitive topics.
He denies wrongdoing, claiming he acted commercially and shared no classified information.
The trial continues.
