Representatives Hillary Scholten and Haley Stevens visited the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan, on February 17, 2026, to investigate the December death of detainee Nenko Gantchev, a 56-year-old Bulgarian national.
Despite touring the facility and speaking with four detainees, including one who described harsh conditions and fear of retaliation, the lawmakers received no new information about the death, which ICE lists as suspected natural causes.
They criticized the lack of transparency from DHS and Secretary Kristi Noem, who has not responded to their inquiries, and highlighted concerns over the facility’s profit-driven model and detainee treatment, especially given that nearly 86% of those held had no criminal convictions.
