A third of Irish school meals don’t meet nutrition standards despite reforms.
A third of hot school meals in Ireland fail to meet basic nutritional standards, according to Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary, following a dietitian’s review of 400 meals across primary schools.
The assessment, focused on five of 16 Healthy Ireland framework guidelines, found shortcomings in fruit and vegetable availability, salt use, and fresh water access.
While 80% of suppliers removed high-fat, high-salt “treat” foods, the remaining 20% are to be phased out.
The universal hot meal program, serving 550,000 students across 3,200 schools since 2019, costs €280 million in 2026, or €3.20 per meal, with on-site inspections planned to verify compliance.
