Peru’s interim president removed by Congress over corruption allegations tied to secret meetings with Chinese executives.
Peru’s interim President José Jerí was removed from office on February 17, 2026, by a congressional vote of 75 to 24, citing corruption allegations tied to undisclosed meetings with Chinese executives, one linked to government contracts and another under investigation for illegal logging.
The move, part of a broader pattern of political instability, marks the seventh presidential change in over a decade.
Jerí, who assumed office in October 2025 after Dina Boluarte’s impeachment, denied wrongdoing, saying the meetings were for a cultural event.
He will return to Congress until a new president is sworn in on July 28, ahead of the April 12 elections.
The crisis highlights deep institutional rifts and public distrust, despite Peru’s stable economy and low debt.
