Norman C. Francis, who died at 94, was a civil rights leader and educator best known for his 47-year presidency at Xavier University, the nation’s only historically Black Catholic university.
He gained national attention in 1961 by sheltering injured Freedom Riders and hosting a public news conference to highlight racial injustice.
As Loyola University’s first Black law student, he helped shape future leaders, including New Orleans mayor Moon Landrieu.
