A newborn Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin was spotted in Cambodia on February 17, 2026, the first calf recorded that year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The four-day-old calf was seen with adults in Kratie province’s Kampi dolphin pool by a joint team from the Fisheries Administration and WWF.
This sighting adds to a positive trend, as Cambodia recorded eight calves in 2025 with no deaths.
The critically endangered species is estimated to number around 113 individuals in a 120-kilometer stretch of the Mekong River in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces.
