A mobile breast screening bus is touring rural Otago and Southland, New Zealand, offering free mammograms through March 2026 to improve early detection, especially for Māori, Pacific Island, and rural women who face higher breast cancer rates.
As of January 2026, 68.5% of Māori and 60.5% of Pacific women in the region had been screened.
The service, run by WellSouth with ScreenSouth Limited, includes outreach, education, and a new automated system to invite eligible women, with national eligibility expanding to age 74 by 2029, adding around 130,000 more women to the program.
