Missouri lawmakers pass bill to end most vehicle safety inspections, citing technology and reduced regulation.
The Missouri House has passed a bill to end most vehicle safety inspections, removing the biennial requirement for vehicles over 10 years old or with over 150,000 miles, as well as pre-sale checks for used cars.
Sponsored by Rep. Ann Kelley, R-Lamar, the legislation argues modern vehicle safety systems make inspections unnecessary and aims to reduce regulatory burden.
Inspections would still be required after accidents if ordered by police and for rebuilt salvage vehicles.
The bill now moves to the Senate, with supporters citing technological advances and personal responsibility, while opponents warn of potential safety risks.
The change, if enacted, would take effect in January 2027.
