Malaysia’s health minister says 85% of TB cases are among citizens, stressing socio-economic causes and urging early treatment and prevention.
On February 18, 2026, Malaysia’s Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that 85% of tuberculosis cases involve Malaysian citizens, refuting claims that foreigners are primarily responsible.
He emphasized TB’s link to socio-economic factors like overcrowding and malnutrition, stressing that early detection and a six-month antibiotic regimen can cure the disease.
The minister urged the public to seek care for persistent coughs or unexplained weight loss, avoid stigma, and adopt preventive measures including BCG vaccination, healthy lifestyles, and proper ventilation.
As of February 16, 2026, 2,571 cases were reported nationwide, with 10 new active clusters identified.
