Maharashtra officially cancels its 2014 Muslim reservation, though it was never legally effective.
The Maharashtra government has formally canceled its 2014 order granting a 5% reservation to Muslims in government jobs and education, though the policy had been legally invalid for over a decade.
Introduced via an ordinance in July 2014, the reservation was stayed by the Mumbai High Court in November 2014 and expired in December 2014 when the state legislature failed to pass it into law.
The Supreme Court later upheld the high court’s decision, rendering the quota inoperative.
Despite this, the government had not formally revoked the original resolution until February 18, 2026.
The new order declares all related decisions, certificates, and communications void, halting future issuance of caste certificates under the category.
The move is largely symbolic, as the reservation never took effect.
