Iranian screenwriter Mehdi Mahmoudian, co-writer of the Oscar-nominated film *It Was Just an Accident*, was released from prison on February 17, 2026, 17 days after his arrest in Tehran.
He was detained following his signature on a statement criticizing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the government’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests.
