The Supreme Court of India has scheduled April 22, 2026, for its final hearing on appeals by the CBI challenging the suspension of sentences for former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and others in the fodder scam cases.
The scam involves alleged fraudulent withdrawals of nearly ₹950 crore from state treasuries between 1992 and 1995 during Yadav’s tenure in undivided Bihar.
The CBI argues the Jharkhand High Court violated legal principles by suspending sentences post-conviction without a change in circumstances, calling the release illegal.
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices M.M.
Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh, noted the advanced ages of the accused, some in their 60s, 70s, and late 80s, and indicated it would close cases involving deceased individuals.
The outcome will determine the legality of post-conviction sentence suspensions in high-profile corruption cases.
