Ghana's labor commission to mediate university strike over pay and retirement disputes.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has called an urgent meeting on February 18, 2026, for four Ghanaian university unions and their employers to resolve an ongoing strike disrupting public universities.
The strike, now in its second week, stems from disputes over service conditions, including the replacement of overtime allowances with a "call-in allowance" and unpaid financial obligations, which unions say violates a 2021 agreement.
Despite a High Court ruling calling the strike illegal and government appeals, the unions continue their action.
The NLC aims to mediate through dialogue to restore academic operations.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) criticized the use of court injunctions, urging instead for good-faith negotiations and a review of a contested retirement policy to prevent further unrest.
