Former Wausau fire chief pleads guilty to stealing over 1,000 painkiller vials, including fentanyl, from department between 2024 and 2025.
Jared Thompson, former Wausau Fire Division Chief, has reached a plea deal after being accused of stealing over 1,000 vials of pain medication, including fentanyl and hydromorphone, from the department between early 2024 and mid-2025.
Officials say he diverted the drugs while responsible for ordering supplies, with coworkers reporting suspicious behavior, including off-duty visits and evidence of drug use.
An audit revealed a massive discrepancy, far exceeding the department’s typical annual usage.
Thompson, who was terminated in September 2025, faces three felonies and two misdemeanors, with a potential sentence of over 10 years.
A plea and sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 9, 2026, and he remains free on a $25,000 bond.
