A 60-foot temple chariot collapsed during the Mayana Kollai festival on the Palar River in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on February 17, 2026, injuring seven people seriously.
The chariot, from Kazhinjur village, tipped over while being moved from the riverbed to the road after a ritual procession, trapping about 10 people.
Emergency crews and locals rescued those trapped, and the injured were taken to Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai.
District officials visited the site and hospital, ordering an investigation and urging safety reforms.
The festival, which involves deities from 10 villages, routinely features chariots far exceeding the 12-foot height limit set by regulations.
A similar accident occurred in 2023.
