The EU proposes freeing Gibraltar residents' EU travel, work, and residence rights post-Brexit, ending border checks with Spain.
The European Commission has proposed legislation to restore free movement rights for Gibraltar residents, allowing them to live, work, and travel freely within the EU, following years of post-Brexit uncertainty.
The agreement, finalized after negotiations between the EU, UK, and Gibraltar, will eliminate border checks at the Gibraltar-Spain frontier and integrate Gibraltar into the EU’s single market for goods, while Spain maintains Schengen border controls.
The proposal now moves to EU member states and the European Parliament for approval, with implementation expected soon.
The deal resolves the last major unresolved issue from Brexit, bringing legal certainty and stability to a region where 96% voted to remain in the EU in 2016.
