Alcoa will pay A$55 million to restore 2,100 hectares of native forest in Western Australia’s Northern Jarrah Forest, cleared between 2019 and 2025 without required approvals.
The settlement, the largest of its kind in Australia, funds conservation, endangered black cockatoo protection, and invasive species control.
Under a national interest exemption, Alcoa can continue limited land clearing for 18 months while a strategic assessment evaluates its operations through 2045.
The company also pledged A$4.2 million in additional offsets and committed to increased rehabilitation efforts.
Public opposition remains high, with over 59,000 submissions against a proposed expansion.
