AISD freed from state special ed oversight after fixing 600+ delayed evaluations and 40 compliance issues.
Austin Independent School District has been released from state oversight of its special education program after more than two years, the Texas Education Agency announced on February 17, 2026.
The move follows the district’s completion of a corrective action plan addressing a backlog of over 600 overdue evaluations and 40 compliance issues identified in 2023.
AISD reduced its diagnostician-to-student ratio, hired 170+ new staff, launched a new data system, and completed 120,000 hours of professional development.
The district also settled a federal lawsuit by creating a fund for affected students.
While officials celebrate the milestone, they acknowledge ongoing challenges in improving academic outcomes for students with disabilities, with about 75% currently performing below grade level.
