Victoria Police’s new GP-based mental fitness checks for recruits face backlash over safety and training concerns.
Victoria Police’s 2025 shift to having GPs approve recruits’ mental fitness for duty is drawing criticism from the RACGP, which warns GPs lack training to assess high-risk policing roles, risking public safety and exposing doctors to legal and insurance liabilities.
The new process replaces internal psychological evaluations with an online test and GP approval, raising concerns about unfit candidates passing and potential “doctor shopping.” While Victoria Police defends the change as efficient and safety-conscious, it will meet with RACGP on February 18 to discuss revisions.
