Utah buys former magnesium plant for $30M to protect Great Salt Lake, secure water rights, and begin cleanup.
Utah has acquired the former US Magnesium plant in Tooele County for $30 million in a bankruptcy auction, gaining control of 4,500 acres and valuable water rights to help protect the shrinking Great Salt Lake.
The state plans to donate much of the water rights to prevent up to 8,000 acre-feet of annual withdrawal, equivalent to the use of 300,000 homes.
The facility, a long-time polluter with hazardous contamination, was designated a Superfund site in 2009.
While Utah assumes cleanup responsibility, it is not taking on new Superfund liabilities and continues pursuing US Magnesium and its parent company for costs.
The purchase enables environmental remediation and supports efforts to stabilize the lake amid ecological and economic concerns.
