Thirty-eight Whirinaki homes are no longer at high flood risk after a $23 million resilience project began, restoring property rights and insurance access.
Thirty-eight homes in Whirinaki, Hawke’s Bay, are no longer classified as Category 2C flood risk after the $23 million Whirinaki flood resilience project advanced, with construction beginning February 23.
The change, confirmed by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, follows a $209 million boost from the Government’s North Island Weather Events programme, managed by NIFF, which revived the project after a 2025 funding delay.
Infrastructure upgrades include stopbank reinforcement, culvert improvements, and road-raising on State Highway 2.
While flooding remains possible, the update removes properties from the FOSAL framework, restoring residents’ ability to buy, sell, and insure homes, marking a key recovery milestone.
