Smithfield Foods is building a new $1.3 billion processing plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, replacing its 117-year-old downtown facility.
The 1.1 million-square-foot plant, set to open by late 2028 in Foundation Park near Interstates 29 and 90, will feature advanced automation and increased capacity beyond 20,000 hogs daily.
The project, the largest business investment in South Dakota’s history, will preserve 3,200 jobs and support regional agriculture.
A $50 million donation from T. Denny Sanford will fund land acquisition, and the relocation enables redevelopment of the historic downtown site.
Smithfield, which has operated in Sioux Falls since 1909, calls the move a transformative opportunity for economic growth and community revitalization.
