A proposed wind farm at Scawd Law in Scotland’s Borders region poses an “unacceptable risk” to golden eagles, conservation group Restoring Upland Nature warns, citing satellite and field data showing collision risks up to six times higher than developer Fred Olsen Renewables’ estimates.
The project, with eight 180-meter turbines and 60MW capacity, could endanger a recovering eagle population, especially fledglings.
RUN says the risk at Scawd Law alone may exceed that from all existing wind farms in southern Scotland, and criticizes outdated data used by the developer.
The Scottish Borders Council’s planning committee will decide on the application in March.
A 2024 incident confirmed the first recorded eagle death from a turbine strike in the region, involving a bird named Sparky.
