Pope Leo XIV has appointed Tyler VanderWeele, a Catholic epidemiologist and Harvard professor, to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
A 2012 convert to Catholicism, VanderWeele leads Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program and advocates for a “positive epidemiology” focused on well-being, guided by Catholic social teaching.
He has contributed to research on family, religion, and public health and previously co-signed a brief opposing same-sex marriage.
The academy, founded in 1994, includes scholars from diverse backgrounds and is currently led by Sister Helen Alford and Cardinal Peter Turkson.
