Perth’s transit agency shut down a controversial high-pitched noise device installed under an overpass to deter homeless people, after public outcry and criticism from officials.
The Public Transport Authority installed a 24/7 high-pitched noise under Perth’s Lord Street overpass to deter rough sleepers, a move made without government approval and criticized by Premier Roger Cook and Housing Minister John Carey.
The device was turned off after backlash from advocates who called it inhumane and counterproductive, urging focus on safe housing and outreach instead.
The PTA said it will work with the City of Perth on a better solution.
