Paulson is closing an Ohio factory, moving production to China, and cutting 150 union jobs despite his public support for U.S. manufacturing.
Billionaire John Paulson, a major Trump donor and vocal advocate for U.S. manufacturing, is closing Conn Selmer’s East Lake, Ohio, plant by June 2026 and moving production to a new facility in China, eliminating 150 union jobs.
Despite publicly opposing offshoring and supporting tariffs to protect American industry, Paulson’s company began shifting work to China in 2025, using lower-quality materials and removing parts from the Ohio line.
Workers and union leaders, including UAW Local 2359 president Robert Hines, called the move a betrayal, citing broken promises and lack of communication.
The company says the shift aims to improve competitiveness, but critics argue it benefits executives without lowering consumer prices.
