Over 70 people sickened in India after eating contaminated buckwheat flour during religious festival, sparking food safety concerns.
On February 16, 2026, at least 70 people in Greater Noida fell ill after consuming buckwheat flour, or kuttu, during Mahashivratri, prompting police to seal a retail shop and warehouse and detain four individuals, including the warehouse owner.
The flour, traced to HD Spices in Chipiyana Buzurg, is under investigation for possible contamination or adulteration.
Symptoms included nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, with some patients hospitalized.
The incident has intensified national concerns over food safety, echoing recent warnings by MP Raghav Chadha about widespread adulteration in staples like milk, spices, and oils, which he called a "raging health crisis" linked to serious health risks.
