Nio set a record by swapping 146,649 batteries in one day in China on February 15, during the Lunar New Year travel rush, showcasing the growing use of battery swapping as a fast alternative to charging.
The technology, which replaces a depleted battery with a fully charged one in about three minutes, is supported by Nio’s 3,700 swap stations across China, where the company has now completed 100 million swaps.
While Nio’s vehicles in China are designed for this system, its upcoming Firefly hatchback for the Australian market in 2026 will not include swapping, instead using a 42kWh battery and fast charging.
Battery swapping remains in early development in Australia, with widespread adoption unlikely without significant infrastructure growth.
Other automakers have explored the technology, but some have scaled back efforts.
