The Nigerian Data Protection Commission has launched an investigation into e-commerce platform Temu over alleged violations of the National Data Protection Act, citing concerns about data privacy, surveillance, and cross-border data transfers. Preliminary findings show Temu processes personal data of about 12.7 million Nigerians, with 70 million daily active users globally. The probe focuses on whether the app’s access to contacts, photos, and location is justified by its core functions. The NDPC warned that third-party data processors handling Temu’s data without verifying compliance may face legal liability, underscoring growing regulatory scrutiny of foreign tech platforms operating in Nigeria.
