Maldives' president attended Bangladesh’s swearing-in ceremony as BNP returned to parliament after 15 years.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Dhaka on February 17, 2026, to attend Bangladesh’s parliamentary swearing-in ceremony, marking the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) return to parliament after a 15-year absence.
The BNP, which won 209 of 297 seats in the February 12 election, took their oaths at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban under tight security, led by Tarique Rahman.
The event, attended by India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and leaders from 13 countries, underscored regional diplomatic engagement and Bangladesh’s peaceful democratic transition.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the main opposition with 68 seats.
