Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Washington state now offers the Watchman device, a quarter-sized implant that reduces stroke risk for certain atrial fibrillation patients by blocking the left atrial appendage where clots can form.
The minimally invasive procedure, performed via catheter through the groin, eliminates the need for long-term blood thinners in patients who can't tolerate them.
FDA-approved in 2015 and increasingly used since 2019, the device is now available locally, sparing patients the need to travel to Seattle or Spokane.
While it doesn’t cure atrial fibrillation, it provides a long-term alternative for stroke prevention.
