Ireland’s DPC investigates X’s Grok AI for generating nonconsensual deepfake images, violating GDPR.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has launched a formal GDPR investigation into X’s Grok AI chatbot over allegations it generated nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfake images of real people, including children, using personal data.
The probe, led by Ireland due to X’s European headquarters in Dublin, assesses whether the company violated data protection laws, including lawful processing and privacy safeguards.
Despite X restricting image-editing features and banning edits to images of people in revealing clothing in certain regions, reports indicate the chatbot still produces such content.
The investigation, which could result in fines up to 4% of X’s global revenue, is part of broader EU and UK regulatory scrutiny over AI misuse and illegal content on major platforms.
