India’s ED fines NewsClick and its editor ₹184 crore over alleged foreign investment violations.
The Enforcement Directorate has imposed a ₹184 crore penalty under FEMA on news portal NewsClick and its editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha, with ₹120 crore against the company and ₹64 crore against Purkayastha.
The penalty stems from alleged violations involving misrepresentation of foreign direct investment and improper classification of foreign remittances as export of services, which the ED says were deliberately structured to evade regulations.
The investigation began after a 2021 raid on NewsClick’s offices and Purkayastha’s residence, during which the ED collected statements from over 25 individuals.
The case is part of broader scrutiny over the outlet’s foreign funding, including past allegations linking it to American billionaire Neville Roy Singham.
NewsClick has not yet responded to the penalty.
