A Ghanaian court awarded Ernestina Torgbor $200,000 after finding Vince Kontoh broke a marriage promise following an 11-year relationship.
An Accra Circuit Court has awarded Ernestina Torgbor GH₵200,000 in damages after finding businessman Vince Kontoh breached a promise to marry her, ending an 11-year relationship. The court, led by Justice Sedinam Awo Kwadam, ruled that Kontoh’s actions—including giving her a ring, publicly acknowledging her as family, cohabiting, and financially supporting her and her children—constituted a serious promise. The court awarded GH₵50,000 in general damages, GH₵150,000 for breach of promise, interest from February 16, 2026, and GH₵20,000 in legal costs. It recognized her beneficial interest in a six-unit apartment block and a two-bedroom unit in East Legon, ordered her to keep a Toyota RAV4 and an industrial blender, and dismissed Kontoh’s ejectment claim, citing her reliance and contributions. The decision underscores legal protection for long-term commitments based on marriage promises, even without formal marriage.
