Ghana launches 6,000-acre tomato farm to cut imports and boost food security.
Ghana is launching a 6,000-acre tomato farm in the Afram Plains, backed by a Spanish agribusiness firm and the government, to end reliance on imported tomato paste.
The project, piloted for two years with strong yields, aims to boost domestic production and processing, reduce annual losses of $600 million from imports, and create jobs.
The Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana warns that poor infrastructure and post-harvest losses cost the economy billions, and has unveiled a five-year strategy calling for $3.2 billion in investment to build a local seed-to-shelf system, cut import costs, and strengthen food security.
