A Florida teacher was arrested for starting a 5-acre fire during a drought emergency and burn ban.
A Polk County high school teacher, Brian Webster, was arrested on February 15, 2026, for intentionally starting a backyard fire that burned about five acres during a county-wide burn ban and a state-declared emergency due to severe drought.
Authorities say Webster, 57, was burning cardboard and debris in an old refrigerator when the fire spread despite his claims of monitoring it.
The incident occurred amid over 30 brush fires reported across the county in a single day.
He faces four second-degree misdemeanors, including reckless land burning and violating the burn ban, and was booked into the Sheriff’s Processing Center.
