Erwin Vanegas, 22, of Rossville, Georgia, pleaded guilty to malice murder in the death of 71-year-old Robert White, who died on January 18, 2025, from injuries sustained in a December 5, 2024, assault while they were cellmates at the Catoosa County Jail.
Authorities say Vanegas repeatedly stomped on White, who was in bed, causing fatal injuries.
Chief Judge Brian M. House sentenced him to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 30 years.
The case was prosecuted by Acting District Attorney Deanna Reisman and Senior Assistant District Attorney Beth Evans, with investigation led by Lt. Todd Pitts of the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office.
The plea came before a scheduled jury trial and underscores the zero-tolerance policy for violence in jails.
