Colombia identified priest Camilo Torres’ 1966 remains via DNA, honoring the 60th anniversary of his death.
Colombia has identified the remains of Camilo Torres, a Catholic priest and former ELN guerrilla, killed in a 1966 skirmish, using DNA from bones found in 2024 at a Bucaramanga military cemetery.
Matched to a sample from his father exhumed in Bogotá, the identification was confirmed by the UBPD, a unit established by the 2016 peace deal.
The remains were handed over on February 16, 2026—the 60th anniversary of his death—to priest Javier Giraldo, who will oversee burial at Bogotá’s National University, where Torres studied and served as chaplain.
The UBPD has identified about 700 remains since 2017, aiding families amid Colombia’s ongoing efforts to account for victims of its decades-long conflict.
