China cut air pollution sharply since 2013, boosting life expectancy, but challenges remain.
China has significantly reduced air pollution since launching a national "war against pollution" in 2013, with Beijing's PM2.5 levels dropping 69.8% and nationwide particulate pollution falling 41% from 2014 to 2024, according to the University of Chicago’s Air Quality Life Index.
These efforts, including coal plant closures, factory relocations, and vehicle restrictions, contributed to a 1.8-year increase in life expectancy.
While 88% of days in 2025 met China’s "good" air standard, many cities still exceed World Health Organization guidelines, and pollution reductions have slowed due to industrial shifts westward and exhausted easy fixes.
The government aims to eliminate severe pollution by 2025 and lower its standard to 25 micrograms per cubic meter by 2035.
