Canada names Janice Charette chief trade negotiator ahead of CUSMA review amid U.S. tariff tensions.
Canada has appointed Janice Charette, a veteran public servant and former clerk of the Privy Council, as its chief trade negotiator for the upcoming review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
The appointment, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on February 16, 2026, comes amid heightened trade tensions, including U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber.
Charette will lead Canada’s negotiating team ahead of a joint assessment by July, working with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and new U.S. ambassador Mark Wiseman.
The review is expected to focus on market access, supply chains, and labor standards, with Ottawa seeking a 16-year extension of CUSMA.
