Over 20,000 people are expected at Blacksmiths Beach in Swansea-Belmont for the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships, marking the event’s return after a five-year absence.
Hosted by the Swansea-Belmont Surf Life Saving Club, the competition began February 19 with age and adaptive events including sand sprints, beach flags, and board races, followed by Masters championships for athletes 30 and older, some in their 80s.
The elite Opens and Surf Boat championships on February 27 will feature about 70 to 80 clubs from across NSW.
Local athlete Kaitlin Rees expressed excitement about racing at her home beach.
The event is projected to generate $3 million in annual economic impact for Lake Macquarie, according to Mayor Adam Shultz, and is set to remain in the area for at least two more years.
