A stunning photo of the Milky Way over an abandoned barn in Balsdean Valley, titled *Ancient Light* by Michael Harris, has won the South Downs National Park’s annual astro-photography competition, marking the park’s 10th anniversary as an International Dark Sky Reserve.
The image, capturing light that traveled 26,000 years to Earth, was praised for its composition and connection to the site’s long human history.
Richard Murray’s *Snail Trail to the Stars* won the Life at Night category, while Nigel Stanbury’s *Jellyfish Nebula*, a deep-space image of a supernova remnant 5,000 light years away requiring 22 hours of exposure, took the new Deep Space award.
The competition, with over 130 entries, supports the ongoing Dark Skies Festival through February 22.
