A judicial panel led by retired judge Justice RS Chauhan has been formed to investigate the February 5, 2026, coal mine blast in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills that killed 31 people.
The three-member commission, established under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1952, will examine accountability, illegal mining practices, and potential constitutional exemptions to central mining laws.
In response, authorities arrested 14 individuals linked to illegal coal extraction, seized over 15,000 metric tonnes of coal and explosives, and transferred the district police chief amid criticism over enforcement failures.
A separate Special Investigation Team is also probing the incident.
The inquiry, expected to conclude within six months, follows a decade-long ban on coal mining by the National Green Tribunal.
