Israeli man arrested for spying for Iran, accused of targeting ex-defense minister.
Israeli authorities have arrested Fares Abu al-Hija, a 32-year-old from Kaukab Abu al-Hija in northern Israel, on suspicion of spying for Iranian intelligence.
He was charged with gathering data on former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, including photographing and filming locations near Gallant’s home in Amikam, delivering encrypted devices, and receiving payments via cryptocurrency.
Authorities say he was recruited via Telegram in August, admitted to working for a foreign agent, and continued despite suspecting the nature of his activities.
The Shin Bet and Israel Police linked the case to a broader rise in Iranian efforts to recruit Israeli civilians since the June 2025 conflict, using digital platforms and economic incentives.
The suspect remains in custody following an indictment.
