Ireland’s flood relief funds may be cut to meet a legal obligation to build a science centre, despite warnings from officials.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) warns it may cut flood relief spending due to its legal obligation to complete a €70 million children’s science centre by December 2029, with €4.2 million already spent and €576,000 in legal costs.
No department has stepped forward to fund the project, which the OPW undertook without prior approval.
OPW chairman John Conlon says diverting funds from flood defences—critical after recent severe flooding—would be nearly impossible.
The Comptroller and Auditor General confirms the OPW would likely bear the cost if no other department assumes responsibility.
Minister of State Niall Collins dismissed the concerns, stating flood defence projects have sufficient funding and will be supported regardless.
