Ireland expands Buy and Renew Scheme to fast-track social housing via contractors, targeting vacant buildings ahead of 2027 tax.
The Irish government has expanded its Buy and Renew Scheme to allow contractors to directly buy and renovate vacant, derelict buildings for social housing, requiring them to sell completed homes to local authorities or Approved Housing Bodies.
This new contractor-led pathway aims to speed up housing delivery, target hard-to-reach properties, and support local tradespeople.
Since 2016, the program has restored 960 homes.
The change comes ahead of a 2027 Derelict Property Tax, expected to increase property turnover, and strengthens monitoring through a national derelict site register.
