India’s UPI surpasses cash as top payment method, used by 57% of people, driven by speed, ease, and incentives.
A government survey released in February 2026 reveals that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the most preferred transaction method, used by 57% of respondents, surpassing cash at 38%.
The study, based on 10,378 respondents across 15 states, attributes UPI’s rise to ease of use, instant transfers, and government incentives totaling ₹8,276 crore since 2021-22.
UPI now accounts for 80% of digital transactions, with QR code deployments growing from 9.3 crore to 65.8 crore.
Over 65% of users make multiple daily transactions, especially those aged 18–25, and 94% of small merchants accept UPI, with 72% reporting higher sales and better record-keeping.
Cashback incentives and speed were key motivators, and the findings support continued policy efforts to advance India’s digital, less-cash economy.
