India's Supreme Court rejected Abu Salem's claim he was unlawfully jailed, saying he must seek relief from the Bombay High Court.
The Supreme Court of India on February 16, 2026, dismissed a plea by Abu Salem, convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, who claimed he had served his 25-year sentence under an extradition agreement with Portugal and was being held illegally.
The court, citing a prison affidavit showing he had served about 19 years, directed him to pursue his claim before the Bombay High Court, which had previously ruled he had not met the 25-year threshold.
The apex court declined to intervene, affirming that only the high court can decide the matter, and emphasized that Salem had not exhausted all legal remedies.
