India launched a CBDC-powered food distribution system in Gujarat, using digital wallets and grain ATMs to deliver rations transparently.
India launched its first Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-powered Public Distribution System (PDS) in Gujarat, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurating the initiative on February 15, 2026.
The system, using RBI-authorized e-Rupee digital wallets, enables beneficiaries to redeem foodgrains via QR codes or Aadhaar-based OTPs at the 'Annapurti' grain ATM, a 24/7 machine that dispenses up to 25 kg of wheat, rice, and other essentials in 35 seconds.
The pilot, covering 26,333 families in Gujarat, aims to eliminate corruption and leakage by ensuring real-time tracking and transparency, building on prior digital reforms like e-ration cards and the One Nation, One Ration Card scheme.
The rollout will expand to Union Territories like Chandigarh and Puducherry, with nationwide scaling expected within three to four years.
