Illinois hunter finds 1872 shipwreck Lac La Belle in Lake Michigan, 150 years after it sank.
A team led by Illinois shipwreck hunter Paul Ehorn has discovered the wreck of the luxury steamer Lac La Belle, which sank in Lake Michigan on October 13, 1872, more than 150 years after its loss.
Found in October 2022 about 20 miles offshore between Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin, the 217-foot vessel was located using side-scan sonar after Ehorn used a clue from fellow wreck hunter Ross Richardson.
Built in 1864 and previously lost in 1866, the ship sank during a storm while en route from Milwaukee to Grand Haven with 53 people aboard, killing eight when a lifeboat capsized.
The wreck, now covered in quagga mussels, shows an intact hull and preserved oak interiors.
The discovery marks Ehorn’s 15th confirmed wreck find, highlighting the urgency to locate Great Lakes shipwrecks, as invasive mussels threaten their preservation.
